Working Under One Hat

Riggs Distler was contracted to perform the Heavy Civil, Mechanical, & Electrical portions of the North Flare Project for PBF Energy at the Paulsboro Refinery. This past week Riggs performed a key milestone by installing the Flare Stack. The flare stack was broken up into (3) pieces, the bottom stack, the top stack, and the flare tip.

All piping, electrical conduit, & insulation was installed on the flare stack prior to the lift being performed. Our team spent weeks planning this lift. It was executed  as planned in three days. A five hundred ton crane with a mega wing was utilized for the main picks, along with a hundred ton crane for tailing, and a two hundred and fifty ton crane for use in the man basket. This was a very complicated lift sequence, with a lot of different trades involved. PBF Energy management & safety team  praised our teams’ safety, communication, planning & execution.

Along with the flare stack lift, Riggs Distler’s mechanical scope of work included fabrication & installation of approximately 11,000’ of large bore and small bore pipe. Now that the flare stack is set we will proceed with the remaining pipe installation to the stack, testing, and finalizing turnover to the plant.

Special thanks to Mike McMichael, Dustin Warner,  Scott Beakes, Jim Jones & Jay Vankirk for their help with executing this lift in a safe & successful manner.
